What Is Microblading?

Microblading is a semi-permanent form of eyebrow tattooing. The procedure is similar to traditional eyebrow tattooing, but the microblading technique creates a more realistic, natural-appearing result. These results can last up to 18 months with proper care.

The microblading technique differs from standard eyebrow tattooing because each hair stroke is created by hand to produce a thin, natural-looking line. These lines or “hairs” blend in with existing eyebrow hair, unlike traditional eyebrow tattooing which utilizes a machine and needle producing thicker, less natural lines.

How is microblading done?

The microblading application procedure is a two-step process. At the initial visit, a combination of hair simulation and shading is utilized to create a base for the new eyebrow. This is typically done with a lighter color that compliments the natural brow hair. It’s better to take a more conservative approach initially. A good rule of thumb to consider is that you can always add more, but you can’t take away.

The second application is four to six weeks later and utilizes hair simulation only. Hair strokes are applied with a darker color, closer to that of your natural eyebrow hairs. This visit will create density to make the application look more blended and natural by adding the second application on top of the base created at the first visit.

Keep in mind, it’s an adjustment

Something to remember is that although you will likely love your new eyebrows, it’s still a new thing on your face and will take some adjusting too. This is another reason why it is best to be more conservative on the initial application. Most clients return after four to six weeks and are ready to go darker, thicker, or even both! It is typical that after the initial visit that you will be happy with your new brows, but after the second visit, you will love them!

What to expect during a microblading procedure?

After taking several measurements of your face and brows, your microblading artist will use a brow pencil to draw a shape on for you that best compliments your natural bone structure. This is a collaboration process that can take anywhere from 5 to 45 minutes, sometimes even longer, depending on each individual. You will approve the final design.

Next, a topical numbing medication will be applied. During the numbing process, your microblading artist will go through your medical history, your consent, and your post-care instructions with you. Picking out your color is next. Again, this is a collaboration. You will have the opportunity to ask any questions you would like.

The actual procedure takes anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes depending on how much of your own hair you had to begin with and how much work is being done. You will feel some strokes more than others, but it is tolerable. This is not a pain-free procedure, but the results are worth it!

Is microblading right for me?

Anyone who is tired of penciling in their eyebrows every day can benefit from microblading. If you are spending more than half your makeup time on your eyebrows, this would be a great service for you. It is a wonderful thing to wake up every day and have your eyebrows already done. If you are interested in microblading, your microblading artist can do a quick screening with you to make sure you are a good candidate. Most people are, this is just done as a precautionary measure for your own safety.
