Take On 2018 With Positivity

Are you making a New Year’s Resolution this year? With research telling us that just a fraction of Americans keep the resolutions they make in January, it can feel like a fruitless exercise. While I’m not big on resolutions, I love the idea of using the New Year as an opportunity to hit the reset button.

January is a great time to set intentions for the year ahead. Whether you choose to go all-out with a single resolution or a little less structured by setting some broad intentions for 2018, here are some ways to keep yourself on track throughout the coming year.
Focus — When I am overwhelmed, I always try to focus on what is most important to me in the moment. If I am spending time with my family, that is exactly where my focus should be. When I exercise, I focus on getting the most possible out of the hour I have given myself by drawing my attention inward. To nourish my body, I focus on what will give me the most energy and keep me feeling my best.

Give yourself grace — Often times, when we “fail” at our intended goal or resolution, we throw in the towel and fall back into the status quo. Even the most dedicated amongst us have “off days,” but those blips on the radar don’t have to take you back to ground zero. Recognize that you’re human and forgive yourself for missing a workout or falling off the healthy-eating wagon. Tomorrow (not next year) is a new day and a new opportunity to recommit to your goals and intentions.
Find balance in your schedule — Take stock of what your goals and intentions look like day-to-day. Have you packed your calendar with continuing education, exercise regimens, meal prep, and kids’ lessons? Your goals are more achievable when you build in time to take care of yourself. You need (and deserve) a little down time each week to recharge, and your body and mind will be better prepared to bring your A-game when you do so!
Feed your mind with positivity — Getting and staying in the zone is so much easier when you support yourself and your abilities. Recognize what you are doing well and show yourself gratitude for progress. Don’t beat yourself up for things you wish you had done differently. Instead, use these as opportunities to grow, and move on.
As you enter the New Year, appreciate the fresh slate that 2018 offers. Consider setting a goal or intention for the year; keep consistent but allow room for small bumps along the way. Take on the year with focus, grace, balance, and positivity!
