Express Gratitude

With Thanksgiving at the end of the month, November is a natural time to express gratitude. With all the benefits we reap from gratitude, don’t wait until the turkey and mashed potatoes hit the table to start counting your blessings!


    A 2014 article in Forbes Magazine (7 Scientifically Proven Benefits of Gratitude, Amy Morin) outlines the number of ways a practice of gratitude can positively impact your life:

1. Gratitude improves existing relationships and helps foster new ones.
2. Gratitude improves physical health (grateful people experience fewer aches and pains and report feeling healthier).
3. Gratitude reduces toxic emotions and effectively increases happiness.
4. Gratitude enhances empathy and reduces aggression.
5. Grateful people sleep better.
6. Gratitude improves self-esteem and reduces social comparisons.
7. Gratitude fosters emotional resilience.

    Now that we’re sold on gratitude, how do we find and express appreciation more every day? We can start by appreciating ourselves. Our bodies are incredible machines that complete the complex functions of breathing and circulation without any conscious effort. When your alarm goes off tomorrow, take a moment to thank your body for waking up! Continue to show your body gratitude by taking care of it — eat nutritious food, move and stretch, enjoy a glass of red wine with a slice of pumpkin pie.
    Find and express gratitude for others by taking time to notice how a small gesture from a coworker can turn your day around, a smile from a cashier can make a hurried moment brighter, or a note from a loved one can warm you from the inside out. Be present throughout your day, notice moments worth appreciating, and be mindful about ways you can express your gratitude.
    Gratitude is a practice, and it takes time to change habits and remember to be present, observe, feel, and express appreciation. As you work to intentionally practice gratitude for yourself, your health, your loved ones, and the world around you this month, notice how you feel. Let these positive changes start an attitude of gratitude beyond November and all year round!
