Christmas Shoes

Here at Heartland Foot and Ankle Associates, we know how important a pair of shoes can be to your overall health and happiness. During the holiday season, we like to take a minute to reflect on one of our favorite holiday stories, The Christmas Shoes by Donna VanLiere.

This heartwarming story is about a man standing in a checkout line with some last-minute shopping on Christmas Eve, but he's not feeling the holiday spirit. The customer in front of him is a little poor boy, dressed in worn-out, dirty clothes. He has been searching for the perfect pair of shoes for his mother, who is dying from cancer, so that she may look her best if she meets Jesus later that night.
As the boy presents his purchase to the cashier, with every cent he has to his name, the cashier sadly tells him he doesn’t have enough money to purchase the shoes. The broken-hearted boy turns to desperately ask the man for help, explaining that although his family is poor, his mother always did her best to make Christmas special for her family. The narrator pays for the shoes, and the boy thanks him and runs home to his dying mother.
That short moment, as their paths crossed on Christmas Eve, their lives changed forever. The man rediscovered the true meaning of love, life, and holiday from his encounter with that poor little boy. That boy helped him understand the true meaning of Christmas.
The Christmas Shoes is a universal story of the deeper meaning of destiny, of sharing humanity, and carries an important message: that sometimes the smallest things in life can make the biggest difference. So, let’s not wait for big, materialistic opportunities in life. Let’s open our eyes, and look for and appreciate those little things in life. For one day, we may look back and find that they truly were the big things.
