The Flavors of Zumba® Fitness

Zumba® Fitness was co-founded by three men, all named Alberto, from Columbia. They are Alberto Perez (BETO), Alberto Perlman (A.P.) and Alberto Aghion. In the Zumba world, they are known as the three Albertos. These men, along with thousands of entrepreneurs, known as the Zumba Instructors Network (ZIN), have built a fitness/dance industry that has expanded to 186 countries and reaches over 15 million people. Even the name of the fitness empire is unique. As the story is told, the three Albertos were searching for a dance-based name like "rumba." Rumba comes from the verb "rumbear" which means going to parties, dancing, and having a good time. So, they proceeded down the alphabet until they came to the letter “Z,” Zumba.

Zumba is for everybody and every body! Each Zumba class is designed to bring people together in a party-style environment. How does it work? Zumba fitness classes are often called exercise in disguise. Guided by a licensed Zumba instructor the “work” is taken out of the workout by mixing low-intensity and high-intensity moves for an interval style, calorie-burning dance fitness party set to Latin and World rhythms. The benefits are a total-body workout combining all elements of fitness: cardio, muscle conditioning, balance, and flexibility. Students leave feeling energized and happy.
In addition to the basic Zumba classes, the company has added many “Specialty Programs,” all taught by licensed instructors. Zumba has a program for everyone. Some of the types of programs included in the specialties are as follow:
Zumba Gold This program is for the active older adult looking for a modified class. It can also be taught chair style. The class focuses on all elements of fitness.
Aqua Zumba This program blends the Zumba philosophy with water resistance.
Zumba Toning This program adds resistance work by using Zumba Toning sticks, focusing on specific body groups, and enhances the sense of rhythm and coordination while toning target zones including arms, core, and lower body.
Zumba Gold Toning Low to moderate-intensity strength training exercises are essential to prevent a dramatic reduction in muscle mass, muscle strength, atrophy, and sarcopenia (loss of skeletal muscle mass).
Zumba Sentoa This program combines strength and resistance training with innovative dance moves using a chair. It is a high-intensity workout focusing on defining muscles and improving cardiovascular health, a major calorie burner, and all done without having to lift a weight.
